Macutec Once Daily are supplements recommended for patients with Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration (Dry AMD). AMD can cause blurriness or mission regions in central vision. As of 2020, AMD accounts for 5% of global blindness, with estimations that the disease will affect 288 million by 2040. They are to be taken once daily, as recommended by your optometrist.

Clinical research behind Macutec supplementation

Previous clinical studies undertaken by the AREDS2 group in 2013 has found that high levels of antioxidants, including vitamin C (ascorbic acid), vitamin E (dl-alpha Tocopheryl acetate), copper (as cupric oxide), lutein, zeaxanthin and zinc (zinc oxide) were instrumental in reducing the risk of developing dry AMD. The AREDS2 vitamin and mineral concentration is a more efficate and refined formulation, developed from the finding and results of the original AREDS formula.

Macutec contains all the proven AREDS2 nutrients. Although these same nutrients can be found naturally in foods, the specifications provided by AREDS2 contain greater concentrations - at levels that would be difficult to achieve through diet alone. Further, whilst other multivitamins contain the same nutrients as AREDS2, only these AREDS2 formulations have been clinically proven to slow down Dry AMD.

Mechanisms behind antioxidant supplementation

The Macutec formulation works to prevent the progression of Dry AMD by protecting the macular region from radical damage. Although scientific circles have yet to fully understand the true mechanism, it is reliably known that the principal nutrients lutein and zeaxanthin are the key components that help protect the macular from oxidative stress by supporting the density of macular pigment at the retina. Other nutrients, such as zinc, vitamin C and E and copper help to prevent the accumulation of free radicals and cellular damage.

120 capsules or 60 capsules?

The 120 economy pack reduces the daily cost for patients, and improves convenience with each pack lasting 4 months, if taken daily, as recommended. The Macutec supplementation is not available at pharmacies and supermarkets, and is only available from a network of Australian optometrists who provide the product for their patients.
