ORTHOKERATOLOGY
Orthokeratology (Ortho K) is the use of custom made specialised rigid contact lens to gently reshape the cornea and reduce your short-sightedness (myopia) while you sleep. Ortho K allows you to be free from having to wear spectacles or contact lenses during the day.
What is the biggest benefit?
There is published data to show that wearing Ortho-k can reduce progression of myopia by up to 50%. For this reason, it is ideal for patients with progressive myopia, particularly younger children. The other major benefit is that it is not a surgical procedure and is completely reversible upon discontinuation of lens wear. Along with this, because no lenses are worn during the day, it is suitable with active lifestyles and who love to swim regularly.
Is this a surgical procedure?
No. There is no use of lasers or blades. The rigid contact lens gently reshapes your cornea over night while you sleep.
How does it work?
Like orthotics for feet, and orthodontics for teeth, Ortho K uses specially designed custom made rigid contact lens to gently remould your cornea while your eyes are closed. This gentle remoulding reduces the optical power of your eyes, thus giving you freedom from wearing spectacles or contact lenses during the day.
Is it painful?
No. There can be a small amount of discomfort during the first month of wear, however, this mostly occurs while you blink, which will only be from the short time between inserting the lenses and sleeping, and the short time between awakening and removing the lens.
Is it reversible?
Yes. Ortho K is completely reversible upon discontinuation of lens wear.
How do I know if I am suitable?
These lenses are ideal if you are short-sighted and your prescription is less than -5.00D. It is ideal for younger children aged 7 and above with progressive short-sightedness (myopia). However, it is also suitable for all ages and even if your prescription is not progressing and stable. We have plenty of adult patients wearing ortho-k as a form of correction for their eyes.
How much does it cost?
Depending on your level of short-sightedness, the cost of the treatment plan is between varies upon the difficulty of your treatment. We do offer initial consultations to see if you are suitable and explore all your options. We will always find a solution that is most suitable and tailored to your needs.
