Help my eye is red!

Viral conjunctivitis is a highly contagious condition that most commonly presents itself as a pink eye. It is caused by adenovirus or poxvirus in children. Symptoms of viral conjunctivitis include a watery discharge, redness, glare, and a fast onset (it develops very quickly from when you first begin noticing symptoms). Viral conjunctivitis may have a very similar presentation as bacterial conjunctivitis. Click here to find out more.

It is vitally important that in any case of pink eye you have meticulous hygiene to prevent infecting other people around you. This includes washing your hands regularly, avoiding touching of the eye area and santising any equipment that may have been in contact with your eye. It is also advised that you cease wearing contact lenses until the infection is controlled.

Your optometrist may give you tear supplements and drops to help relieve your irritation. In all cases, there is spontaneous resolution in about 14 days or less. A visit to your optometrist will help manage other secondary conditions that may develop also.
