Preventive Myopia

Last week we discussed myopia and its causes so now you’re probably wondering how can I prevent this for my children?

It’s quite simple really. Just follow these rules:

  1. Set aside 90 minutes every day for your children to spend time outdoors. This could mean playing at the park, going bike riding, walking the dog and much more. In doing so we are also encouraging them to be more active which benefits their health and well being.
  2. Only allow children to spend no more than 2 hours/day on digital devices such as laptops, phones and tablets.
  3. Remind your children to adopt the 20/20 rule. That is: take a break every 20 minutes for 20 seconds to allow your eyes to relax.
  4. Harmon’s rule dictates that your child should not hold their reading material closer than their forearm. A quick way to check is to get your child to tuck their fist underneath their chin and where their elbow is, is where their book should be. Don’t forget about their regular eye examinations!
