Today we will be discussing a very common question that often pops up during our consultations – “what are cataracts?”
Now cataracts are a condition that everyone will eventually get in their lifetime. It is a condition in which the lens of the eye loses its transparency. As we age our lens becomes cloudy, causing a gradual blurring of our vision.
Seeing through a cloudy lens is a bit like looking through a frosty or fogged up window. This makes it more difficult to read, drive a car (especially at night) or see the expression on a friend’s face – much like the photo above.
There are many risk factors to cataracts and these include increasing age, diabetes, excessive exposure to UV light, use of steroid medications and much more.
Many people do not know they have cataracts because the change in their vision is so gradual. We can’t stress how important it is to have regular eye checks to help detect cataracts and other eye problems at their earliest stages.
