The common cause of a sticky eye in the morning

Bacterial conjunctivitis is a highly contagious condition that most commonly presents itself as a pink eye, and is caused by direct contact with infected secretions. Some symptoms that you may observe include a gritty, burning eye with perhaps a crusty discharge with a “gluing” of the eyelids in the morning. Bacterial conjunctivitis may have a very similar presentation as viral conjunctivitis.

It is important that if you do present symptoms of a red eye, you try not to touch your eye or other surfaces after doing so. It is important to keep good hygiene and wash your hands frequently to avoid spreading it to others. It is also important to call and visit your optometrist for a more thorough check-up.

It should be comforting to know that bacterial conjunctivitis will resolve itself within 5-7 days. However, if needed, your optometrist may prescribe you with antibiotics or corticosteroids to help with persisting symptoms.
